What is Sacrococcygeal Dysgenesis?  Manx Symdrome!  You probably can ready Manx  and Symdrome but what is that?

According to my vet's textbook:

Sacrococcygeal dysgenesis produces a hopping gait.

  • More severe signs at or soon after birth include LMN urinary/fecal incontinence, megacolon, and LMN paraparesis/paraplegia.
  • Some are normal at birth but develop progressive signs over several weeks to months as the cat matures.  Damage to the spinal cord with growth occurs as a result of spinal cord tethering (fixation).

Here is another paragraph she showed me.

Sacrococcygeal dysgenesis of Manx cats.

  • An autosomal semi-lethal dominant trait, providing the genetic basis for the absent tail as well as numerous vertebral and spinal cord abnormalities.
  • Homozygotes usually do not survive.
  • There are four phenotypic subgroups - a complete , absence of coccvgeal  sacral +/- caudal lumber vertebrae (the mose severe); fused caudal veretebrae; mobile but kinked caudal vertebrae; and a normal tail.

I don't have good feeling on him.  I will not have any of his progress here for you. And, I  will not express any of his sweetness and my feeling.

Don't give me your opinion and don't show your sympathy.  We need nothing!

They knew someone is in the bathroom.

Angel hangs around outside of the bathroom and eats not much.

Latte is careless as usual.  Well, probably, he does not want to touch it.

Snow, my most concern one, so far, I don't know her feeling about Blue Jay.  Snow has wondered around upstair as well, fell uncertain.

The vet gave me a take home note.

========

Blue Jay is just an adorable and  pretty young kitten.  He is a male.  Unfortunately he was born with significant congenital abnormalities that will likely not improved over time.  It is unlikely to get any worse.

He has neurological dysfunction due to having been born with absolutely no tail.  He may even be mssing part of his sacrum.  We could take rays to see.

At thie time he is eating and no longer has a fever.  He has not been neutered.

He is able to walk even if he has a bunny hop with running.

But he is unable to urinate on his own.  He needs to have his bladder expressed gently three times a day, possible lifelong.  He has a protruding penis.  His penis and prepuce were inflamed and infected, this has resolved.

He has no control over defecation.  Whether normal stool or diarrea he will likely always been incontinent.

The uncontrolled poop and the leaking of urine set him up for a skin infection - we have given him multiple baths.  He needs constant nursing care to keep him clean and dry.  He is also predisposed to urinary tract infections.

Spend the weekend with the little guy and see how you feel.  We can discuss more on Monday.

Unfortunately he does have a poor long term prognosis.  I will help you with whatever you decide.

Good luck Blue Jay!
